Bongoyo Island – Part III

This being my last post for my Tanzania travels series, I decided to save the best for last. Bongoyo island is situated two and a half kilometres North of Dar-es-Salaam. To access the island, you will need to board a boat from Hotel Slipway. It will cost Tshs. 22,000 for the locals and Tshs. 36,000 for persons visiting from other countries. The boats take 4 trips to the island, having taken at least 4 people per trip. Each trip is approximately 30 minutes long.

The island is a great place to go to when you are trying to get away from the busy city life of Dar-es-Salaam. Here you can sunbathe and engage in other activities such as snorkeling. You could also decide to carry your own food and beverages and have a picnic on the island or opt to buy food from the restaurant on the island.

Amenities such as vibanda, mats and low back beach chairs are available but at an additional cost of between Tshs. 2,000 and Tshs. 5,000 each. There are bathrooms as well and a changing room.

One can also take a swim in the crystal clear turquoise ocean or opt to take a stroll on the clean white sandy beaches, since there is really not much to do here.

Unfortunately, one can only stay on the island up until 4:30 pm. If you are looking to catch the sunset, worry not. By the time you get back to Hotel Slipway the sun is already preparing to set and what better way to end your day than to catch it in action :-).
