Nyeri

A few friends and I were on the road again this past weekend and this time we decided to go explore Nyeri. Nyeri town is 148 kilometres from Nairobi, which is about 3 hours by road. However, it took us 4 hours to get there due to a minor accident at the start of our journey. We thank God nobody was hurt.

On arrival, we were received by some fellow photographers who reside there and who also happen to have been our hosts for the weekend. They made sure our stay there was nothing short of amazing.

On Saturday afternoon we set out to explore Zaina forest in Gakanga valley, which is about 30 minutes from Nyeri town. Here we came across some picturesque landscapes. The place is also home to  Zaina falls and the famous Chania river cuts through this valley as well. It is a great place to go trekking. We were lucky enough to have two great guides, Meshack and Sam, take us all round the vast forest. It took us a total of 4.5 hours.

We had such a grand time, from people sliding down the steep slopes to falling inside holes to spiders and tsetse flies clinging onto our clothes (I almost lost my voice because of screaming so much) to stinging nettles brushing against our skins. Getting to the base of Zaina falls was the climax of it all.

Because we had not had enough of Nyeri we opted to spend the night there so that we could explore some more the following day. Best decision… EVER!! We got to see a spectacular sunrise from Mount Kenya. Our wanderlust also led us to Kiawara, Mweiga and Naro Moru towns which are in the Nyeri environs. Here we were able to see some wild animals such as zebras, white rhinos, buffaloes and a variety of bird species.

If you have not already been to Nyeri I would advice that you take a trip there one of these days. You can thank me later 🙂
